NDA confident of Naidu's victory in VP polls
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday expressed confidence over winning the Vice Presidential polls and said their nominee M. Venkaiah Naidu will do justice to the post.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar told media that he was sure of Naidu's victory.
"I am sure of the victory. I hope that all members will vote. All NDA partners and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have described Venkaiah as unique personality. He will do justice for the post that he would hold from today," Javadekar said.
He further said Naidu will be one of the finest vice presidents and will conduct Rajya Sabha by taking everyone into confidence.
Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also lauded Naidu and said he would strengthen the democratic principles as Vice President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha.
"Venkaiah ji is dedicated to the poor and knows democratic principles well. He struggled to serve the poor his entire life," Naqvi added.
Voting for Vice Presidential elections will be held today at the Parliament House complex between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
NDA candidate M. Venkaiah Naidu is pitted against Opposition parties' nominee Gopal Krishna Gandhi.
The counting of votes will begin after polling and the results will be declared by 7 PM. The one who bags 50 per cent plus one vote of the total valid votes cast will win the poll.
The electoral college for vice president consists of elected and nominated members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
The term of incumbent Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who held the position for two consecutive terms, will come to an end on August 10.
