Mamata Banerjee: I don’t crave for the chair, even I offered to quit as West Bengal CM but...

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said that she did not wanted to continue as West Bengal chief minister and had told her party as she does not crave for the chair. Banerjee was addressing her first press conference after her party’s set back at the national election in West Bengal.

Breaking her silence two days after the Lok Sabha election results were announced, TMC chief said, “Aamar vivekey legechhey (It has hurt my conscience). This shows that people didn’t vote. The chair is not important for me. I don’t care for the CM’s chair. I wanted to resign as chief minister before and wanted to work as a party president, but my colleagues prevented me from doing so. I can continue (only on one condition): if all of us raise our voices jointly.”

“I have told my party, for six months I have been unable to work. I was a powerless Chief Minister. I cannot accept that. I don't want to continue as Chief Minister,” Banerjee said.

In recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, BJP scored a remarkable number of seats in a long-term Left stronghold turned Trinamool territory, West Bengal. BJP won 18 seats out of 42 Lok Sabha seats while Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool won only 22.

Mamata Banerjee questioned the fairness of the election. "I can only continue if people are willing to take a bold step. We need to increase our vote share. BJP's vote has come from the Left. This is mathematics," said the Chief Minister.

As BJP won 303 seats lone in 543- seats Lok Sabha and 352 along with its allies. On this Banerjee said, "I can't accept this. How can BJP win so many seats in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana? People are scared to speak but I am not."

"One party that did not commit anything, won seats. I think I have done more for people. Now I need to work for my party," she was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
