Karnataka's move to regulate media not healthy for a democratic setup: BJP
A day after Karnataka house panel decided to form rules for media, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 29 March, 2017 said regulating media is not healthy in a democratic setup and requested the Assembly Speaker to relook into his decision.
"Don't think it's proper, healthy in a democratic setup. I requested Karnataka Assembly Speaker to have a relook into his decision and go for a proper evaluation of what happened and what is necessary," BJP leader Suresh Kumar told ANI.
Kumar said that the committee should not have formed as the house has its own tradition.
"I think nobody understood the logic behind the formation of this committee. The complainant is becoming the prosecutor and in a way they going to pass a judgement also in a form of recommendation," he added.
Earlier, a House Committee of the Legislative Assembly was set up to frame rules and regulations for the news media.
The decision was taken after both the members of the houses, came down heavily on what they called irresponsible reporting by the media.
Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker K.B. Koliwad announced the formation of the House Committee to draw Lakshman Rekha for the electronic media.
