INX Media Case: Karti Chidambaram moves Supreme Court challenging ED dominion
On 28 February, CBI held Karti Chidambaram at Chennai airport after he landed from the UK for non-corporation in the matter. He was being interrogated at the airport lounge, and later taken to Delhi and was produced him at CBI court. After which Karti now moved the Supreme Court challenging the jurisdiction issued by the Enforcement Directorate in the INX Media case.
Karti Chidambaram is a son of Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram and is in already in CBI custody and will be produced before Delhi court on March 6. In his motion, Karti argued that ED and CBI are investigating the matters that were not mentioned in the FIR relating to alleged irregular approval of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) proposal for foreign investment in INX Media in 2007.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said on Monday that it would hear the plea after it was mentioned for an early hearing by lawyer Shally Bhasin.
Karti is accused of having received Rs 3.5 crore from the Mumbai based INX Media company and help it to get FIPB clearance in 2007 when his father was Union Finance.“Karti used his influence to manipulate a tax probe against INX Media in a case of violation of FIPB conditions to receive investment from Mauritius," CBI told to media.
In 2007, the company was run by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea. Karti has maintained that allegations made against him are 'false' and politically motivated.'
