INX Media Case: CBI arrest Karti Chidambaram for 'Non-Cooperation' in money laundering
After numerous raids on Karti Chidambaram in past few years by the ED and CBI over his involvement in the INX Media money laundering. Finally, the son of former Union Minister P Chidambaram has been arrested by the CBI for non-corporation in the investigation in the case.
The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX media was created by Karthik. According to CBI, Karti is accused of taking Rs 3.5 crore from Mumbai-based INX media when his father was Union Finance Minister. “Karti used his influence to manipulate a tax probe against INX Media in a case of violation of FIPB conditions to receive investment from Mauritius," CBI said.
Karti was held after he refused to cooperate with investigating agency at the international arrival lounge at the Chennai airport, who just landed from London.
Congress reacting on the issue, took a dig over BJP led Modi government and said it is their diversionary tactics. "This is a classic diversionary tactic by the Modi government to shift the focus from the corruption," said Sanjay Jha, party spokesperson.
Delhi court had sent Karti's CA S Bhaskar Raman to 14-days judicial custody in the money laundering case on Monday. Post CA Bhaskar Raman was produced from the ED, Special judge N K Malhotra sent him to Tihar Jail, whose special public prosecutor Nitesh Rana had sought three more days of custodial interrogation.
The CBI FIR also names INX Media directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea -- both accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.
