INS Viraat Controversy: Yes, I was with my father but crazy to think it was holiday, says Rahul Gandhi
Congress president Rahul Gandhi has admitted that he has been on now-decommissioned Indian naval ship Viraat but termed as "crazy" the idea that family used the aircraft for a holiday. The Congress president was responding to the allegations levelled by PM Modi.
PM Modi at a recent election rally in New Delhi, alleged that the Gandhi family used India's premier warship for holidays in Lakshadweep archipelago.
While talking about the pictures of a holiday taken by the Gandhi family in Lakshadweep in the 1980s, Rahul Gandhi said, "I've been on the Viraat. I've been with my father on it when he was the PM. Of course there are pictures. He had gone for an official visit ... and I accompanied him."
When he was asked about the holidays at Lakshadeep on INS Viraat, he said, "Holiday on INS Viraat? That's crazy. Why would anyone holiday on aircraft carrier? It's not a cruise ship!"
Let us tell you that PM Modi in a rally in New Delhi on Wednesday said, "At the time when, INS Virat was positioned for protection of maritime boundaries, it was sent to take Rajiv Gandhi and his family to an island for their holiday. Even his in-laws were onboard INS Virat. Was it not a compromise of national security?"
