India reacts to Chinese President Xi Jinping's remark on Kashmir

Following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s statement on Kashmir, which said that he has been watching the Kashmir situation very closely, India restated on Wednesday saying that it would be in everyone’s best interest if other countries stayed away from its internal matters.

"We have seen the report regarding the meeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping with Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan, which also refers to their discussions on Kashmir," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

"India's position has been consistent and clear that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. China is well aware of our position. It is not for other countries to comment on the internal affairs of India,” he added.

China who claims to be Pakistan’s close ally has supported its allegations of rife atrocities in Jammu and Kashmir on international platforms ever since the Article 370, which provides special status to the valley was revokes.

On Wednesday, Xi Jinping assured Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan the it would support Pakistan on matters pertaining to its key interest. State owned Xinhua News Agency quoted him as stating that although the right and wrong of the matter, India and Pakistan needs to resolve the situation via peaceful talks.

The Chinese President’s statement seem to have created some discomfort, as he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai for an informal summit later this week.

"The forthcoming Chennai Informal Summit will provide the two leaders with an opportunity to continue their discussions on overarching issues of bilateral, regional and global importance, and exchange views on deepening India-China Closer Development Partnership," the government has said in a statement.

A joint statement issued after the meeting between Imran Khan and Xi Jinping declared that the "Kashmir issue is a dispute left from history, and should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter".

"China opposes any unilateral actions that complicate the situation. The two sides underlined that a peaceful, stable, cooperative and prosperous South Asia was in common interest of all parties. Parties need to settle disputes and issues in the region through dialogue on the basis of equality and mutual respect," the statement further said.
