'Ensure Indian elections are not influenced & undermined,' says Parliament panel to Twitter

The Parliamentary panel in its meeting asked the Twitter to ensure that Indian election are not compromised and it doesn’t gets influenced like that of the US.

Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology, headed by Anurag Thakur read out a personal letter addressed to him by Twitter's CEO Jack Dorsey and allowed Colin Crowell, Vice President & Global Policy Head to appear today, instead of the former.

The panel has summoned officials of other social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram on March 6 to further discuss out the concerns regarding fake news and manipulation of data.

Anurag Thakur has further asked “Twitter to ensure that Indian elections are not undermined and influenced by foreign entities. He stressed they must work in real time with Election Commission to address issues.”

The panel which is hearing the social media giants to “safeguard citizens” rights has referred to the US election of 2016, and said that no “international interference” should be done in the Lok Sabha elections.

As per media reports, Twitter has been given 10 days to reply in writing to questions that remained unanswered and they may be called again before the Parliamentary Committee.
