Delhi Shocker: Woman kills mother-in-law with frying pan, husband conceals CCTV footage

A shocking case of heinous murder has emerged from the national capital in which a 48-year-old woman allegedly thrashed her 86-year-old mother-in-law to death with a frying pan in the Neb Sarai area. The deceased elderly woman was suffering from arthritis.

Police suspect that the accused woman may have grown frustrated with taking care of the elderly woman and decided to kill her.

On April 28, a neighbour called the police and informed them that his friend's mother, Hasi Som, had fallen in her flat and was bleeding.

When a police team reached the spot, they found the elderly woman lying in the kitchen with multiple injuries on her face and skull.

The family, consisting of 51-year-old Surjit Som, his 48-year-old wife Sarmishta Som, and their 16-year-old daughter, has been living at Neb Sarai's Swastik Residency since 2014.

According to the police, the family hails from Kolkata, and the mother was living alone until March 2022 when Surjit brought her to the national capital and rented a flat for her in front of his home. Surjit told the police that his mother had been suffering from arthritis for a long time and had difficulty walking.

During the postmortem conducted on April 29, doctors found that the injuries on the face and skull could not have been caused by a fall, raising suspicions and prompting a thorough investigation by the police. When the police team searched the deceased's flat, they found a CCTV camera installed in the bedroom, but it had no storage device. Surjit stated to the police that he had a live feed from the CCTV camera on his phone and monitored his mother's movements daily. He also mentioned that the CCTV was not working on the day of the incident due to a power cut in the area.

Initially, nobody suspected foul play in the incident. However, Surjit's 16-year-old daughter disclosed that her mother and grandmother did not get along, which Surjit confirmed. During the investigation, Surjit confessed that he had taken out the memory card of the CCTV camera before calling the police.

Upon checking the CCTV footage, it was revealed that on April 28 at around 10:30 am, Sarmishta went to Hasi Som's flat holding a frying pan. She went behind the elderly woman in the kitchen, which was out of the range of the CCTV footage, and hit her several times with the frying pan. The cries of the 86-year-old could also be heard in the footage. The accused's husband kept the memory card with him and viewed the footage after the last rites of his mother.

According to the postmortem report, there were 14 injuries all over the body of the deceased woman. The police have lodged a case under section 302 (murder) of the IPC against Sarmishta. The reason behind the killing is yet to be ascertained.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
