Delhi Shocker: Acid attack on school girl in Dwarka; one detained

In the latest development in the acid attack incident on a 17-year-old girl that occurred in Delhi’s Dwarka area this morning, the police said that they have detained a boy and questioning is going on.

The boy was detained after the victim raised suspicion over two people known to her.

“The girl was with her younger sister at the time of the incident. She has raised suspicion over two persons known to them. One person has been detained and further investigation is going on,” Police said.

According to the police, two bike-borne boys threw an acid-like substance on a 17-year-old girl while she was walking on the street. The incident area falls under the jurisdiction of Mohan Garden Police Station.

The victim received 8 percent burn injuries, the police said.

“Today info was received at Dwarka's Mohan Garden PS that a 17-year-old girl has been attacked with an acid-like substance by 2 bike-borne boys. She is under treatment & stated to be stable. She has received 8% burn injuries. One boy detained and is being questioned,” said DCP Dwarka.

The incident took around 7:30 am when the 17-year-old victim was walking on the street with his younger sister.

The victim girl's father said that the acid has entered in her eyes. "Our younger daughter came running to the house and said that acid has been thrown at her sister. Both the boys had covered their faces, they are yet to be identified. It (acid) has entered both her eyes," says the father of the victim girl.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) is taking cognizance of the incident and a team will reach the hospital and meet the victim girl.

The Delhi Commission for Women has also issued a notice to the Delhi Police in connection with the acid attack and requested to arrest the accused persons as soon as possible.

“We have issued notice to Delhi Police to arrest the attackers & to give strict punishment to them. We're helping the victim & her family. But the biggest question here is why retail sale of acid isn't banned, even after several notices,” said, Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwal.

In Delhi, crimes against women are increasing, as evidenced by a number of recent incidents. Recently, police have recovered a highly decomposed body of a woman from a suitcase in the Punjabi Bagh area. The suitcase was found in a drain and the body was putrefied beyond recognition, cops said.

Aftab Amin Poonawalla killed his girlfriend Shradha Walkar, chopped off her body into 35 pieces, stored them in a refrigerator, and disposed of the pieces in a nearby forest, piece by piece. Currently, the accused is in judicial custody, and an investigation is underway.
