CJI Ranjan Gogoi denies sexual harassment charges, says, 'Independence of judiciary under serious threat'
A former employee of the Supreme Court has alleged that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi made sexual advances on her in October 2018. The CJI has denied all the allegations.
The Supreme Court, on Saturday, immediately called an unusual hearing ‘to deal with a matter of great public importance touching upon the independence of judiciary, on a mention being made by Tushar Mehta’.
The apex court has directed media to show restrain in order to protect independence of the judiciary. The bench didn’t pass any order on the sexual harassment issue.
“Independence of judiciary is under very very serious threat and there is a larger conspiracy to destabilise the judiciary,” ANI quoted CJI as saying.
“There is some bigger force behind the woman who made sexual harassment charges” he added.
Ranjan Gogoi, while leading the bench, said that if such thing continues, then good people will not be going to become judges and the whole institution of judiciary will come under serious threat. CJI further stated that the woman has a criminal background and this is a bigger issue.
