Karnataka: Cattle trader’s body found under suspicious condition

Body of a cattle trader was found under suspicious conditions in Ramanagara district’s Sathanur village yesterday, police said on April 2. The man has been identified as 38-year-old Idrees Pasha.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and arrested some suspects including one Puneet Kerehalli.

Further investigation is underway.

Several cattle and beef smuggling incidents have been reported in the country including Karnataka. In October last year, five people were arrested for the possession of 2,200 kg of beef that they were smuggling from Ramanagara district to Goa.

The accused persons were booked under sections 4, 7, and 12 of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Prevention of Cattle Act-2020.

Notably, the BJP-led Karnataka Government enacted Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020, which came into effect in January 2021. The law makes it illegal to buy, sell, transport, slaughter, trade all cattle (cows, bulls, buffaloes, oxen). The only exception is for buffaloes (above 13 years) and terminally ill cattle (after certification from veterinarian). Those who break the law and found guilty can be imprisoned for up to 7 years and fined between 50,000 to 5 lakh.
