Bihar: Liquor party inside lock-up in dry state; 2 cops, 5 inmates arrested

Five inmates and two constables arrested for having a liquor party inside a jail premises in Patna. The inmates were in the custody of the excise police station in Paliganj.

According to the police, the Excise Department officials on November 29 arrested five persons and kept them in custody at the excise police station. On the same night, they started consuming liquor inside the jail premises.

One of the inmates made a video of the liquor party and sent it to his family members, saying that he was fine and facing no problem in police custody. The same video went viral on social media, forcing police to take action against the accused. 

Paliganj sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Awadhesh Dixit, said that the liquor party video also reached the senior officials of Patna and after that, police arrested the accused persons, including two constables who also consumed liquor inside the look-up.

After receiving the video, the Paliganj police station under the leadership of SDPO raided the excise police station and arrested all the accused, the police said.

The arrested persons were identified as Kundan Kumar, Chandan Kumar, Shahanshah Ansari, Ramji Manjhi and Sanjay Manjhi. The name of the constables, who were caught on the video accompanying the in-custody accused in the liquor party, are Siyaram Mandal and Chhote Lal Mandal.

"The police found a viral video on social media. In this video, five inmates are drinking alcohol in police custody and the policemen were accompanying them. Taking quick action, the police raided the liquor prohibition police station and arrested five inmates and two constables who were cooperating while drinking alcohol from the spot. How they got alcohol and other things are part of the probe," said Dixit.

The police have also found two mobile phones and a huge quantity of liquor at the police station. The arrested persons were sent to judicial custody, and further investigation into the matter is underway.

Notably, Bihar is a dry state, and liquor prohibition laws have been in force here for the last several years.
