BHU protests: Congress says PM Modi should apologise to girls who were lathi-charged

The violent Banaras Hindu University (BHU) protests inside the campus have been criticised by the Congress as they have said that the Prime Minister should apologise to the girls, who were mercilessly lathi-charged by the cops.

"The Prime Minister should first apologise to the girls in BHU, because despite being there, he did not care to ask why the girls were protesting," Congress leader Mohan Prakash told ANI.

He further said that BHU's each and every brick has been funded by the likes of great freedom fighters.

"Our daughters kept sitting there for two days and asking the authorities to do something about the eve teasing," Prakash said.

Mohan Prakash further said that the girls just wanted someone to put a light on the dark roads, so that security is increased.

"The saddest part is that Prime Minister Modi stayed there for two days, but if he couldn't go there himself; he could at least have sent somebody from the authority to just listen to those girls," said Prakash.

He further asserted that the girls were just asking their right which was not difficult to adhere to.

"What were they even asking that was so difficult to do and then after that the way lathi charge took place, I have never seen it happen in any university," Congress leader said.

"One of the journalists is still in hospital, and the police have broken both his hands. I was informed there was a kid who was beaten up as well, what is happening here?" he added.

"This incident proves that there is no law in Uttar Pradesh and the reason behind that is that there is no police motivation left," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, in wake of violence which took place in BHU campus, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DG) Uttar Pradesh and BHU Vice-Chancellor seeking a detailed report on the matter and submit his response within four weeks.

The NHRC its statement said, "Suo motu cognizance taken in the subsequent use of unwarranted manhandling and thrashing of agitating students, mostly women, by UP police"

The development comes a day after Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Shrikant Sharma asserted that a judicial inquiry has been initiated to probe in the BHU violence case.

A number of students were hurt when clashes broke out between the police and students of BHU after the students started protesting against alleged molestation of a girl.
