Arun Jaitley: Rahul Gandhi was partner in UK firm, Backops got defence contract during UPA regime
Taking swipe at UPA government over the Defence deal during their regime, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said the Rahul Gandhi owned the majority 65% equity between 2003 and 2009 in the UK based Backops Limited before the firm shut down. While Rahul Gandhi's business partner Ulrik Mcknight was 35% co-owner of Backops UK.
Finance Minister said that Congress President Rahul Gandhi was a partner in UK firm Backops Limited. The press conference comes after Business Today reports claimed that the co-promoter of Congress president Rahul Gandhi's UK firm Backops Limited had acquired defence offsets under the UPA regime.
The Business Today reports also said that Ulrik Mcknight later went on to acquire offset contracts from French defence supplier Naval Group against Scorpene submarines in 2011.
In 2009, Gandhi withdrew from the British company Backops and then the company stopped its operations. Attacking Rahul Gandhi, BJP leader said: “this is the story of a man who once wanted to be a defence dealer and now wishes to become the PM of India.”
Addressing Media Arun Jaitley said, “On May 28, 2002, a company is formed in India named Backops Private Limited. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka become the company’s director. In 2003, a company with the same name is formed in Britain. Rahul, along with a US citizen, become company’s directors.”
“Now Rahul Gandhi is going to be judged by the standards and level of proof he's laid down,” Arun Jaitley said.
