The train tragedy which struck Amritsar on the day of Dussehra, when scores of people were watching the burning of Ravana's effigy, a train had mowed down 60 people leaving 50 injured.

The recent development in the case as updated by the authorities is that 40 of the 59 people who were killed in the tragedy have been identified and so far, 36 bodies have been cremated as on Saturday.

As per the latest development in the case, the train route which was blocked since last two days and many trains were diverted or cancelled which had to pass from the same route, has now resumed its services with immediate effect.

The bodies of four individuals who belonged to Uttar Pradesh, have been sent to their hometowns respectively by the district administration, the officials said today.

As per the officers, the post-mortem examination of 29 bodies has been done until now.

The 36 bodies were cremated in batches at a ground near Shitla Mata Temple here in the presence of officials of the state government and family members of the deceased.

At least 59 people were killed and 72 injured Friday evening after a crowd of Dussehra revellers that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching burning of Ravana effigy was run over by a train near here, officials said.

The injured have been admitted to seven hospitals, the officials said.

 

The train was coming from Jalandhar when the accident occurred at Joda Phatak near Amritsar, where at least 300 people were watching 'Ravana dahan' at a ground adjacent to the tracks.
