Amid Mamata Banerjee fiasco, Rishi Shukla takes charge of CBI director, as 'caged parrot' finally gets its new master

The new CBI director Rishi Kumar Shukla has taken charge of the agency today and he will be in the probing agency for a tenure of 2 years.

Shukla, who is a 1983-batch IPS officer, had been the Director General of Police in Madhya Pradesh and was removed from the post as soon as the Congress’ Kamal Nath helm to power.

Earlier, the CBI was being headed by the interim director M Nageshwar Rao, whose appointment was challenged by the Common Cause NGO in the Supreme Court. CBI has been making front page news since the October last year, when the director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana were sent on leave due to internal rift.

Earlier, the CBI conflict has seen a national outrage due to the dilemma in West Bengal where the Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar was alleged to be absconding and later on, the Bengal police detained CBI officials in return.

Support has poured in for Mamata Banerjee from several opposition parties. Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, former J&K CM Omar Abdullah, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav.

The fact of the matter is CBI has been implicated, an autonomous body, which has been in tandem over a period of time due to the uncertainty after the Supreme Court had step in and the Ministry of Personnel and Training had recommended that Alok Verma must be sent on leave and the high powered committee had shunted him out of the probe agency.
