After Mugalsarai station and Aurangzeb road, now 60 BJP MPs wants to change Children's day; writes a letter to PM Modi

Sixty BJP MPs wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to shift ‘Children’s Day’ from first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary 14 November to 26 December.

The request has been put forth through the letter written by West Delhi MP Pravesh Sahib Singh Verm signed by 59 other MPs. These lawmakers wanted that Children’s Day should be observed on 26 December when the sons of Guru Gobind Singh attended martyrdom. Verma suggested that ‘Chacha Diwas be celebrated on Nehru’s birth anniversary.

On 26 December during Aurangzeb rule, four minor sons of Guru Gobind Singh - Sahibzada Ajit Singh (18), Sahibzada Jujhar Singh (14), Sahibzada Zorawar Singh (9) and Sahibzada Fateh Singh (7) – were martyred.

In the letter, Verma demanded "November 14 can be attributed as 'Uncle Day' or 'Chacha Diwas' instead of Children's Day as Jawaharlal Nehru was fondly known as Chacha Nehru."

He also raised question over the celebration of Children Day on 14 November only because Nehru was fond of children.

Verma also wants to include other MPs including Congress to support him in his demand.

"So far, 60 BJP MPs have signed the letter. I will also talk to Congress MPs also," Verma told reporters.

Slamming the congress to ‘impose’ Children’s Day on Nehru’s birth anniversary, Verma said “"The Congress government imposed Children's Day on the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. We refer to Pandit Nehru as 'chacha' (uncle) so why don't we celebrate that day as Chacha Diwas. Since Children's Day is centred around children, I couldn't find anyone better than the four children of Guru Gobind Singh, the 'Char Sahibzaades' who martyred themselves, so why don't we celebrate their martyrdom day as Children's Day."

The government  will have to make amendments in the existing legal framework which earmarks November 14 as Children if it is ready to accept Verma’s proposal.
