7th Pay Commission: AIIMS doctors to go on hunger strike, will work without food

The resident doctors of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are set to go on hunger strike from 26th October against “improper implementation” of seventh central pay commission’s recommendations.

Over 2000 doctors will hold protest and will work without food.

The association of doctors has also sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in the issue.

The AIIMS Resident Doctors Association (RDA) has written to PM Modi and alleged that the revised allowances under the seventh pay commission have been implemented in the institutions such as: Safdarjung Hospital and RML Hospital, but doctors are yet to avail the benefit.

“Even after four months of implementation of the revised allowances at the central government institutes like Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital and other autonomous medical institutes such as PGI Chandigarh, we are still awaiting the nod from the Health Ministry,” said AIIMS RDA president Harjit Singh Bhatti in the letter to the Prime Minister.

Speaking on the issue, former AIIMS RDA president Dr. Vijay Kumar said, “We have remained silent for a long time, hoping for a response from the Health Ministry. But there has been a complete lack of constructive steps taken by the ministry.”

“Being a responsible citizen and a doctor we will not hamper the facilities for patients. In our further action to put our demands forward we will work continuously without consuming food,” Kumar added.
