2-Year-Old Girl Murder: Neighbour kidnapped her for money, killed in panic, says police

The absconding neighbour, on whose room the body of a two-year-old girl was found hanging in Greater Noida’s Surajpur area, has been arrested, said police on April 12, adding that the shawl used to strangle her also recovered.

The minor girl had been missing since April 7, and her parents registered a missing complaint at the Surajpur Police station on Saturday. Following the complaint, the police launched a search to find her.

The accused, identified as Raghavendra, had gone missing soon after the incident, but was arrested at the Ghaziabad Railway Station while attempting to escape, police said.

During the investigation, Raghavendra revealed that he had lost his job on April 5 and needed money. He overheard the deceased’s mother saying that her husband had around Rs 10 lakh in his savings account. In dire need of money, the accused planned to kidnap the girl for ransom from her parents.

He kidnapped the girl on April 7 and planned to demand Rs 2 lakh as ransom, but got scared of getting caught when the parents informed the police and a search was launched. In panic, Raghvendra strangled the 2-year-old child to death with a shawl and stuffed her body in a bag. The accused then joined the search to mislead everyone.

As per police, Raghvendra planned to dump the girl’s body in a forest but had to flee as the neighbours started complaining about the foul smell emanating from his rented room.  

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
