23-year old fitness influencer’s surgery to fix body sweat goes horribly wrong
A 23-year-old Mexican influencer and bodybuilder Odalis Santos Mena underwent surgery to remove sweat glands. Odalis had over one lakh followers on Instagram, died on July 7 after her surgery went wrong.
According to the reports, Odalis was recruited by the SkinPiel clinic in Mexico’s Guadalajara to promo a treatment to reduce underarms sweating named MiraDry.
As per a report published in The Sun, the surgery conducts by using heat energy to remove sweat glands. Due to this, there is a reduction of body odour and underarm hair.
To promote the surgery, Odalis underwent the procedure to treat her excessive underarm sweating that involved the removal of her sweat glands during the surgery.
After being anesthetized, Odalis suffered a cardiac arrest, The New York Post said. However, healthcare workers at the clinic give her CPR to revive her but couldn’t succeed as Odalis died soon after.
In fact, Odalis had also endorsed MiraDry surgery on social media by claiming that the no sweat treatment was safe and effective.
An investigation has been launched and officials believed that the influencer died due to a combination of anesthesia and a steroid.
Notably, Odalis Santos Mena had participated in several bodybuilding competitions and also won the 2019 Miss and Mr Hercules title as well as the Wellness Fitness Juvenile contest, The Sun reports.
