Karwa Chauth, one of the most popular Hindu festivals will be celebrated on November 4, 2020. On this auspicious occasion, married women observe fast for the well-being of their husbands.

As per Hindu belief, women break their day-long fast only after sighting the moon at night.

To reciprocate the sentiments of their wives, several men also observe fast on this day. The festival has an important significance, especially for just married couples. Apart from a married couple, unmarried men and women also keep fast for their future partner’s long life.

Women who are keeping fast this Karwa Chauth should know the most important ritual i.e. Sargi.

Karwa Chauth begins with early morning prayers followed by the Sargi, which is eaten before the sunrise.

All you need to know about Sargi:

It is a food platter which comprises of fruits, sevaiyyan, mathri, dry fruits, poori or parathas, coconut, a curry, and a glass of juice or coconut water. It is the first meal which is taken before keeping the fast.

Sargi is consumed after taking a bath and offering the first prayers of Karwa Chauth. It is a healthy diet that keeps women and men to keep the day-long fast.

Preparation of food items such as phirni (rice and milk), roti (wheat), and curry made of vegetables provide wholesome nutrition, while fruit juice or coconut water keeps the body hydrated and dry fruits keep the body energized throughout the day.

Traditionally, the mother-in-law gives the Sargi to a married woman, including new clothes, jewellery, makeup items, and other beauty accessories to the daughter-in-law.

After the Sargi ritual, women observe fast for the whole day and wait for the Moon. After sighting the moon through a sieve, women see the glimpse of their husbands through the same and break their fast by drinking water.
