England announces World Cup squad; includes player who last played ODI 10-years ago
England Cricket Board (ECB) announced its team for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The selectors along with skipper Eoin Morgan took some tough calls as Jofra Archer was not included in the team, where as Joe Denly got a place who last played a 50-over game on October 2, 2009.
Joe Denly will serve a dual purpose of being a leg-spinner and a batsman in the team. Joe Denly is part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad playing in the Indian Premier League 2019. Joe doesn’t have an impressive ODI record as he has played just 9 ODIs and scored 268 runs at an average of 29.77.
Host England are one of the favorites to win the tournament including India, defending champions Australia and Pakistan. Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales and Jason Roy are the top order batsmen England is batting upon.
Ben Stokes is the all-rounder in the team who will bat at number six. Jofra Archer’s exclusion came as a big surprise but the selectors insisted that his performance in the Pakistan series might get him a place in the team. Jofra is performing well in the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are the two spinners in the side, while the pace attack comprises of David Willey, Tom Curran, Chris Woakes, Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood.
