Pakistan: Pervez Musharraf sentenced to death in high treason case

A Pakistan special court awarded the death penalty to former Pakistani president General Pervez Musharraf in the treason case.

A three-member special court comprising Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) Waqar Seth, Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court (SHC) and Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) is hearing the case.

Earlier, the court had said it would announce the verdict on December 17.

Worth mentioning here that, the court on November 19 had said the verdict in the case would be announced on November 28, before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred it from doing so.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government had filed the treason case against the former ruler over the president's imposition of extra-constitutional emergency 2007.

Musharraf was indicted in the case in March 2014 after he appeared before the court and rejected all charges.

He then left Pakistan for Dubai for medical treatment after his name was removed from the exit control list on the orders of the Supreme Court on March 18, 2016.

A few months later, the court had declared him a proclaimed offender and ordered the confiscation of his property owing to his continuous inability to appear.
