Myanmar army suffers big losses

In a recent turn of events, Myanmar's military government faces a significant challenge as it loses control over its border with China. Coordinated attacks by ethnic insurgent armies in Shan State, supported by anti-government groups, have resulted in the capture of military posts, border crossings, and key trade routes with China.

The Most Severe Setback Yet

This marks the most serious setback for the junta since its power grab in February 2021. After years of battling an armed uprising provoked by its coup, the military now appears weakened and vulnerable. Airstrikes and artillery bombardments from the government have led to the displacement of thousands, but it has been unable to regain lost ground. Notably, Brigadier General Aung Kyaw Lwin, a high-ranking officer, is among the casualties, reports BBC.

Insurgent Alignment

This attack is noteworthy as it is the first time that Shan State insurgents have explicitly aligned with the broader campaign to restore democratic rule in Myanmar. These insurgent groups also have territorial expansion ambitions.

China's Unusual Stance

China, typically a restraining influence on border groups, has not intervened to stop this operation. China's frustration with the military government's inaction regarding scam centres in Shan State may explain its position. The insurgents aim to close down these centres, where numerous foreign citizens have been exploited.

Opposition's Armed Uprising

The coup in 2021 led to the violent suppression of peaceful protests, prompting opposition activists to call for a nationwide armed uprising. Many fled to areas controlled by ethnic insurgents along Myanmar's borders to receive training and weapons.
