Jolt to US-Korea ties? North Korea Sued For killing' US 'detainee' student Otto Warmbier
Parents of the US student Otto Warmbier have sued North Korea. Warmbier was jailed in North Korea for a year and later sent back home in a coma state and then after died. North Korea has been sued over alleged torture and murder.
A civil suit was filed in Washington District Court. Parents of Warmbier said that he had gone to North Korea on a tourist visit in Feb 2016. He was in prison there over a year. He was forced to confess that he stole a poster.
The lawsuit filed by Otto's parent called North Korea a rogue regime, took Otto hostage for its own wrongful ends, and brutally tortured and murdered him.
The suite has been filed at a very crucial time when the US is preparing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Last year after Otto's death his parents attended Trump's first State of the Union address. There he had said them "powerful witnesses to a menace that threatens our world."
This week after North Korea announced denuclearization, Trump praised Kim as "very honourable" and "very open."
The lawsuit addressed Warmbier as an innocent student who was on a five-day trip to North Korea in December 2015.
He was detained on January 2, 2016, accused him of hostile acts against the country. He returned to the US after negotiations on June 13, 2017. Six days after his return he died.
