International Labours Day: Sex workers in Australia demand change in laws related to them
Sex workers in Gladstone, Australia are seeking change in state government laws. The present law allows them to choose between working legally and working safely.
A group of sex workers came together in Gladstone yesterday in support of Respect's regional outreach program. This program aims at providing support for sex workers in regional centres. This program will reduce the isolation often experienced by those in the industry.
There is a pocket full of legal brothels in Queensland. Legally, sex workers are allowed in Queensland if alone. But, it is illegal to hang around a public place looking for clients. Even the law is so strict that two sex workers cannot even text each other about their locations. One of the major topics of discussion was medical and information services as Gladstone lack dedicated sexual health clinic.
They also wanted to have clarity on confusion law which does not even allow sex workers to advertise services they are providing.
