India reiterates call for security council reforms
New York: India's permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, reiterated New Delhi's commitment to the expansion of multilateral institutions during her address in New York.
The Relevance of Multilateral Institutions
Speaking at the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council Reforms, Kamboj emphasized that multilateral institutions seldom perish but rather "fade into irrelevance."
Global Leaders Call for Reform
Highlighting the significance of the calls for reform, Kamboj pointed out that over 85 global leaders, during the September UNGA, advocated for comprehensive and meaningful reforms.
Time Ticking for Action
Expressing urgency, Kamboj stressed that the international community must respond to these calls, asserting that turning away from global challenges is not an option. She underlined the ticking clock, urging prompt action.
African Union's G20 Inclusion
Drawing attention to India's presidency, Kamboj cited the African Union's inclusion into the G20 as a move that enhanced the group's representativeness and relevance.
Support for Expansion in Framework Document
Referring to the 2015 Framework Document on "Categories of Membership," Kamboj mentioned that 113 out of 122 member states supported expansion, signifying strong backing for reforms.
Striving for Global South's Voice
Asserting India's stance as the world's largest democracy, Kamboj stated that conversations alone cannot bring about comprehensive reforms. She emphasized India's commitment to ensuring the Global South's voice is heard in the ongoing negotiations.
A Call for Real Action
Distinguishing the Summit of the Future from intergovernmental negotiations, Kamboj urged a realistic approach. She emphasized India's continued efforts to amplify the Global South's voice for immediate action.
