Hosted by veteran satirist Stephen Colbert, the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were just held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Honouring the best in US primetime television programming, the award show is the television equivalent of the Oscars.
Just like the Oscars earlier in the year, this iteration of the Emmys was also a night of firsts. Donald Glover became the first black person to win an Emmy for directing, while Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing for her work on Masters of None.
Riz Ahmed was among the British winners for taking home best lead actor in a limited series or movie for The Night Of . More importantly though, he became the first actor of Asian descent to win an acting Emmy.
Sterling K Brown won for the best lead actor in a drama series which marked the first time an African-American actor has won in the category in almost 20 years. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss also made history, as she won a sixth consecutive Emmy for her performance on her hit comedy show Veep.
Dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale won four of the major prizes at the ceremony. The show won best drama series, best director for Reed Morano (First woman winner in 22 years), best actress for Elisabeth Moss, and best supporting actress for Ann Dowd.
HBO series Big Little Lies was another of the big winners as it took home prizes in the limited series categories, winning best lead actress, supporting actress, supporting actor, director, and best limited series.
