Covid-19 lockdown no hurdle: Sentenced to death via Zoom video call

A drug dealer has been sentenced to death via a Zoom video call in Singapore. This happened even though Singapore remains on lockdown after the spread of Covid-19.

This is for the first time that a death sentence has been meted out remotely in Singapore.

Human rights activists have objected to such punishment when the majority of cases in Singapore have been adjourned until 1 June.

They allege that most of the drug cases hearings in Singapore remain opaque and big shots in the business are never brought to justice, only small drug peddlers are targetted.

Efforts should be made to block the flow of drug in Singapore but nothing concrete has been done to achieve this aim, allege human rights activists.

Singapore boasts of its low crime rate and strong stand against drug use.
According to reports 11 people charged with drug-related offences were executed in 2013.

The Singapore government claims that such executions send a powerful message of deterrence.
