Coronavirus: UK PM Boris Johnson shifted to ICU as symptoms worsen

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been shifted to the intensive care unit after his health condition due to coronavirus got deteriorated, Downing Street said.

According to the reports in BBC, a spokesman said Johnson was moved to ICU on the advice of his medical team and was receiving “excellent care”.

Since Boris Johnson's health got worsened then his position and duties will temporarily be taken by the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, a spokesman added.

The 55-year-old PM was admitted to hospital in London with COVID-19 symptoms on Sunday evening.

According to Buckingham Palace, the Queen has been kept informed about the health status of Boris Johnson by No 10.

A No 10 statement read: "The prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas' Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus.”

"Over the course of [Monday] afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital."

It continued: "The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks to all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."

According to CNBC reports, Johnson was conscious when he was moved to ICU at around 7 pm. However, he was shifted to ICU as a precaution in case he needed ventilation.

PM Johnson announced on March 27 that he had contracted the virus and was experiencing ‘mild symptoms’, including “temperature and a persistent cough.”
