China: 37 students, two adults attacked by knife-wielding attacker at primary school

A knife wielding attacker injured 37 students and two adults at a primary school in southern China on Thursday, according to the local media the perpetrator was a security guard.

All the victims, which includes teachers, were taken to a hospital but were not in a fatal condition, officials in Cangwa County, said.

The episode at the Wangfu Primary School took place at 8:30 am when students would normally come for classes. The attacker (58) was under control, the government said.

"37 students suffered mild injuries and two adults suffered more severe injuries. All of them were sent to a hospital for treatment, and none of their lives are in danger," it said.

Schools in the area had just reopened in May after being shut because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Many schools in China have run into attacks in recent years, forcing authorities to intensify security. This type of attacks have also called for more research into the main causes behinds such acts.

In November, a man climbed a kindergarten wall in Yunnan province and sprayed people with a coronavirus liquid, injuring 51 people, mostly students.

Before that in September, eight school kids died and two others were injured in a school related criminal case in the Hubei province, a 40-year-old man was later arrested.

A knife-wielding man killed two people and wounded two others at a primary school in Hunan province in April 2019.

In 2018, a man murdered nine middle school kids as they were going back home, in one of the deadliest knife attacks seen in China in recent past.

A homemade incendiary device killed eight people and injured many outside a kindergarten in Jiangsu province in 2017.
