1932 Lunch Atop Skyscraper: Glass Negative Shattered, Legacy Intact!

This famous black-and-white photograph, taken on 20 September 1932, captures 11 ironworkers having lunch on a steel beam, suspended 850 feet in the air.

The picture was taken during the construction of the RCA Building in Manhattan, New York City, as part of a promotional effort to highlight the new skyscraper.

Despite being widely attributed to Lewis Hine, the identity of the photographer remains unknown.

The photograph first appeared in the New York Herald Tribune's Sunday supplement on 2 October 1932, with the caption: Lunch Atop a Skyscraper.

Although the original glass negative broke into five pieces, it is now carefully preserved in a climate-controlled facility at Iron Mountain, Pennsylvania, safeguarding this historic image for generations to come.
