Zomato employees tear, burn their official T-shirts in protest against killing of 20 Indian soldiers by China in Ladakh

A group of Zomato employees tore and burnt their official company t-shirts in Kolkata on Saturday. They were protesting against the killing of 20 Indian soldiers by China last week.

In the protest at Behala, some of the employees claimed that they had left their jobs because Zomato has a substantial Chinese investment and asked people to stop odering food through the app.

Previously in 2018, Ant Financial, had put in USD 210 million in the food delivery platform for a 14.7% stake. Recently, Zomato raised an additional $150 million from Ant Financial.

“Chinese companies are making profit from here and attacking the Army of our country. They are trying to grab our land. This cannot be allowed,” a protester said.

Another protester stated that they were ready to starve but wouldn’t work in any companies having Chinese investment.

Earlier in May, Zomato fired 520 employees or 13 % of its workforce in a huge retrenchment exercise because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

There was no instantaneous reaction from the company and whether the protesters were among those who were retrenched was not known.

Twenty Indian soldiers, which included a colonel, were killed in a fierce face-off with the Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on 15th June.
