Woman accuses 4 of gangrape for two years, alleges police inaction

In a horrifying incident of crime against women brought to light from Assam’s Bongaigaon district, a woman accused four men of rape at frequent intervals. The woman also alleged police inaction after she registered a complaint against the accused. She said that the accused had been raping her for the past two years.

In her police complaint, the woman also said the accused circulated her "objectionable photos on social media platforms", blackmailed her, "insulted" her by painting her face black and even threatened to murder her family.

As maintained by reports, the victim, aged 23 is a native of Boudi Bazar Bhawlaguri locality in the Bongaigaon district. She was allegedly gang-raped by four individuals in her area for the last two years.

The victim had filed a police complaint against four accused at Bongaigaon Sadar police station on 29th September. Police had lodged a case under section 354(A) (Assault), 376 (sexual assault) and 342 (wrongfully confines any person).

Nevertheless, according to the victim, after registering a case, police did not take any action against the accused individuals who are still roaming freely.

In her police complaint, the victim stated that, “These four people have been sexually harassing me for the past two years in an interval of 10-15 days. They are blackmailing me by using my bare pictures. They also threatened to kill me and my family."

"My husband worked in a private company in Delhi and during the Covid-19 pandemic, he returned home. They [accused persons] had circulated the objectionable photo on a social media platform and they had insulted me and my children by applying black paints on our faces," the woman said.

The victim also said she had also met police officials of higher rank looking for justice.

“But police have not taken any action against the accused people. They threatened to kill me and my family,” the victim said.

In the meantime, Superintendent of Police (SP) Swapnanil Deka said one accused person was taken into police custody.

“The accused persons had also lodged a complaint against the woman and a cross-case was also registered. Our investigation is underway. We have conducted medical of the victim and also recorded her statement,” the cop said.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for 2020 shows that the rate of crime against women in Assam was 154.3, which is higher than the national rate of 56.5.
