UP woman dies after husband brutally thrashes her over dowry

In an appalling incident of crime reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi, a woman died after she was brutally thrashed by her husband over dowry. A video showing the woman being beaten up by the accused in public have come to light on social media.

The victim, idientified as Saraswati, was a native of Tundwal village which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sursa police station in the district. According to case details, she got married to the accused (Manoj) in 2011. On Sunday, she was pinned to the ground and mercilessly thrashed by Manoj for not fulfilling his dowry demands.

The accused even tried to hang the woman to death. Later, a few locals rushed the woman to a hospital, where she died during treatment, according to a report by News 18.

Later, the victim’s father registered a police complaint against the accused. The complained mentioned that for the past few weeks, his son-in-law had been demanding a gold chain and a buffalo. Furthermore, the complainant alleged that the accused had even threatened them with grave repercussions, the report stated.

On the basis of the complaint, the police lodged a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act, and started efforts to nab the accused. “A team has been formed to investigate the case. Raids are being conducted at several locations to arrest the accused,” the report quoted a police officer as saying.

In another incident reported from Tamil Nadu, a woman, who was two months pregnant, allegedly ended her life by setting herself ablaze. The woman took the step after her husband harassed her for dowry. Following a complaint by her father, a case was filed and an RDO inquest was set in motion.
