UP: To fulfil grandmother’s wish parents of minor girl married her to 10-year-old boy
A shocking news of child marriage was reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, where parents of two minors married them after the girl’s ailing grandmother asked her last wishes to be fulfilled. The incident came to light last week from Inayatpur village when cops intervened and stopped the two families.
As per reports, the family said that the children have only taken 3 and a half pheras while the other three and a half pheras they will take when the girl (12) will turn 18-years-old and boy (10) 21-year-old.
The police have lodged an FIR against the parents of both boy and girl while they are investigating further. Neeta Ahirwar, the district probation officer said that they sent a team of Childline officials to the home of both the kids to look into the matter and will then conduct a counsel with the family members. Also both the families have been asked to appear before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on Monday with documents of the minors.
Well, this is not the first time where parents have married their minors at a tender age in India and to curb this in 1930 first law was made which criminalised the act of child marriage under Child Marriage Restraint Act which was also referred to as the Sarda Act. In 2006 the name of the Act was altered to The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
