Trainee Doctor Rape Murder Case Kolkata: NCW inquiry committee uncovers serious lapses

New Delhi: A two-member inquiry committee constituted by the National Commission for Women (NCW) investigated the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and submitted its preliminary findings uncovering lapses in security, infrastructure, and investigation.

Ongoing Renovations at Crime Scene

The NCW's investigation highlighted a disturbing detail: the site where the crime allegedly took place is undergoing sudden renovations. This action could lead to tampering with crucial evidence, complicating the investigation further.

Absence of Security Guards

One of the most alarming findings from the inquiry committee was the complete absence of security guards during the incident. This lack of security was not limited to the night of the crime but extends to the overall coverage for on-call duty interns, doctors, and nurses during night shifts.

Inadequate Facilities for Female Staff

The inquiry also revealed deplorable conditions for female doctors and nurses at the hospital. The hospital lacks basic amenities, such as well-maintained washrooms, adequate security measures, and proper lighting, putting the safety of female staff at risk.

Incomplete Investigation of Former Principal

The committee noted that the questioning of the former Principal, who resigned following the incident, remains incomplete.

Urgent Call for Action

The NCW’s inquiry committee has urged for a thorough and expedited investigation into the incident. The committee stressed the need for immediate measures to seal the crime scene and ensure that evidence is preserved, while also improving security for female staff at the hospital.
