Telangana: Man without job and money sets bedridden mother on fire

In a shocking case came to light from Telangana where a man allegedly set his mother ablaze after he lost his jobs amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The incident took place on Wednesday in Narsingbatla village in Nalgonda district, 120 km from Hyderabad.

The man has been identified as 45-year-old Tirumala Lingaswami, who worked as a construction labourer.

According to a report in Indian Express, the man had lost his job in Hyderbad amid the coronavirus lockdown and had become penniless to take care of his mother.

The accused man had reportedly told his sisters that he was not in a condition to take care of his ailing mother anymore. Hence, he poured kerosene on his bedridden mother when she was sleeping. After committing the crime, Lingaswami fled from the spot.

Meanwhile, police have launched a hunt operation to nab the accused.

The deceased woman has been identified as a 65-year-old T Shantamma. Reportedly, her hip bone was broken after she fell in the bathroom five years ago and was on bed rest since then.

The man and his three sisters had hired a caretaker for their mother but she also stopped coming to attend the victim after she was allegedly not received the last month’s salary.

Neighbours were also helping the victim woman by giving her food but they did not help her long as she was not able to maintain her personal hygiene.

"The woman's daughter who lives in a neighbouring village used to come down once a week to clean her up and bath her. Otherwise, the old woman was alone and had no help," the report quoted Rajeshwar Reddy, Sub-Inspector, Nalgonda Rural police station.

Since the Telangana government announced the lockdown, Lingaswami returned to his village. After returning to his home, he found that neither his sister nor the caregiver was there to take care of his mother due to the lockdown.

Reportedly, the man called his sisters several times in a bid to escape from his mother’s responsibilities.

On the other hand, police recorded the statements of Lingaswami’s three sisters who alleged that their brother was pressurizing his mother to sell the house amid financial problems due to lockdown.
