26th January commemorates the enactment of the Indian constitution and the progress of the nation to a republic. Year after year, the celebration observing the day make a feature of glorious military and cultural ceremony.

In the national capital, security forces personnel march along the Rajpath, in an elaborated exhibit of military strength. The ceremony on Rajpath screens everything else happening across the country on this day.

History:

While our Independence Day marks freedom from British Raj, Republic Day observes the constitution taking effect. 26th January was the determined date since it was on this day in 1929 that the Indian National Congress put out the Declaration of Indian Independence. opposing the British Regime's dominance.

On 15th August 1947, India got independence.A committee was set-up a few day later, on 29th August, to outline a permanent constitution for Independent India. Dr BR Ambedkar was appointed as the committee chairman. On 4th November1947, the committee drafted the constitution and presented it to the Constituent Assembly.

The Assembly met in many sessions for almost two years before eventually approving the Constitution. On 24th January, 1950, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two handwritten versions of the agreement -- one in Hindi and one in English -- after many consideration and a few alterations.

The constitution came into force two days later, on January 26, 1950. Dr Rajendra Prasad started his first term as President of the Indian Union on that day.

Significance:

The constitution, which was officially adopted in 1950, superseded the British colonial Government of India Act (1935) as the nation's governing text.

On 26th January, 1950, the Preamble to the Indian Constitution, a statement setting forth the primary principles of the Constitution came into force. This fulfilled India’s transition to a sovereign republic. The Constitution displays fundamental rights that should be possessed by every Indian citizens.

Few facts about Republic Day:

1) Between 1950 and 1954, the Republic Day parade was conducted at Irwin Stadium (now National Stadium), Kingsway, Red Fort, and Ramlila grounds.

2) Year after year, the leader of a particular nation is invited to be the chief guest for the Republic Day parade. President Sukarno of Indonesia was the first to attend India's Republic Day celebrations as chief guest in 1950.

3) Each member of the army who takes part in the parade must go through four layers of investigation. Aside from that, their arms are extensively inspected to verify they are not carrying live cartridgea.
