Republic Day 2020: DRDO flaunts Anti-Satellite Weapon System at Rajpath

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) displayed the Anti Satellite (A-SAT) Weapon System at Rajpath during the Republic Day parade on Sunday. With space becoming an indispensable aspect of any nation’s economic and military supremacy, A-SAT weapons plays an important part in providing essential strategic deterrence.

Previously, DRDO launched ‘Mission Shakti’, India’s first ever A-SAT mission and gave a demonstration of its anti-satellite technology.

A live orbiting satellite in the Low Earth Orbit was knocked down in a ‘Hit to Kill’ mode with 10 cm accuracy, with the satellite and the missile proceeding towards each other at a speed of just about 11 km per second.

The stealthy technology of ‘hit to kill’, created for the first time by India for such applications, empowers it to annihilate any adversary satellite by instantaneously colliding with it with on the mark accuracy.

The successful demonstration has put India in an equal footing with the elite club of three countries-- U.S, Russia and China-- that owns this capability.
