Punjab: Car hits cyclist, drives with victim's body on vehicle's roof for 10 km
A car smack into a cyclist, carried the victim on the vehicle’s roof for 10 kilometres, and then ran away after disposing the body near Punjab’s Sunny Enclave area, police said.
The 35-year-old victim lost his life after being struck by the vehicle in Punjab’s Mohali. The mishap was recorded in a CCTV camera placed near the area.
The police have identified the accused as Nirmal Singh, who is a native of Khamanon town in Fatehgarh Sahib district and the victim as Yogendra Mondal, a resident of Mohali’s Aerocity area.
A passerby notified the cops about the accident, Mohali DSP Rupinder Deep Kaur Sohi said.
While looking into the CCTV recording, police stated that the accused had dumped the victim's dead body near the Sunny Enclave area.
According to the police, the accused was driving the vehicle from Zirakpur towards the Sunny Enclave area when the cyclist was hit and fell on the roof of the car.
The accused didn’t pull over and kept driving the car up to 10 kilometres. He made his way across at least 13 road crossing but nobody noticed the overspeeding vehicle with an injured person on its roof.
Following the accident, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him as dead on arrival.
The accused (Nirmal Singh) was later taken into police custody and charged with section 279, 427, 304 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), police said.
The vehicle has also been confiscated.
