Nirbhaya Case: Political leaders across country react strongly to convicts' hanging
As soon as the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder were hanged this morning, political leaders on all parts of the country shared strong reactions on social media as some of them called for abolition of escape clause in the legal system.
The hanging of the four convicts took place at 5:30 am at Delhi’s Tihar jail, less than two hours after the top court rejected the final plea of the convicts. Last night, the convicts had also submitted a petition at the Delhi High Court, where their legal representative cited coronavirus for the dearth of proper documents along with the hurried filed appeal.
Several pleas were filed by the four convicts over the past few months, which deferred their hanging thrice. "Hanged till death! Finally! I know we are late Nirbhaya. #NirbhayaJustice," tweeted BJP MP Gautam Gambhir after the hanging.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called upon state and centre government, asking them for a common resolution to "not allow another Nirbhaya case."
"After seven years, Nirbhaya case convicts were hanged today. It's a day to take a resolution that we will not allow another Nirbhaya case. Police, courts, state governments and the centre should resolve to collectively remove loopholes in the system to let this not happen to any daughter," the AAP chief tweeted in Hindi.
Puducherry Governor Kiran Bedi heaped praises on Nirbhaya’s mother, for never giving up during the last seven years. "Asha Devi mother of #Nirbhya goes down in history as an Unstoppable Mother who fought for ultimate justice for her daughter. Her struggle fully exposed the irony of brutal and merciless criminals who pray for mercy to live for themselves," she tweeted.
The case pertains to the brutal gang-rape and killing of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus on the night of 16th December, 2012, by six people including a juvenile in Delhi. The woman had died at a Singapore hospital a few days later.
