Name and Shame hoardings in UP: Samajwadi Party puts poster against rape accused Kuldeep Sengar, Swami Chinmayanand

A Samajwadi Party leader erected banner in Lucknow with images of former BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar and rape accused Chinmayanand. The poster was placed right next to a controversial hoarding put up by Yogi Adityanath government naming those accused of vandalism during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The Samajwadi Party’s spokesperson IP Singh erected a black hoarding titled in Hindi, "These are the culprits of the state, stay away from them". The hoarding, which also has photos of Kuldeep Sengar and Chinmayanand along with the charges against them, was pulled down by the police on Friday.

"When the protesters have no privacy and the Yogi government does not remove the hoardings despite instructions from the high court and the Supreme Court, then, at the Lohia junction, I too have put up a poster of some criminals named by the courts in public interest. Daughters beware," IP Singh tweeted in Hindi.

Kuldeep Sengar was convicted for the rape of a teenager in Unnao. Chinmayanand was arrested in September 2019 after a law student at UP’s Shahjahanpur accused him of sexually exploiting her for over a year. Soon afterwards, the 23-year-old women was also taken into custody on charges of trying to extort money from the former Union Minister.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Uttar Pradesh government’s action of putting up hoardings against the citizenship law violence accused, stating that there is no law to back the action.

According to sources, the hoardings in which the persons named were asked to pay for damage to public property and warned that their property would be attached otherwise – were placed on instruction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The Yogi Adityanath led UP government had challenged an Allahabad High Court order that called for the immediate uprooting of the ‘name and shame’ posters put up across Lucknow.
