MP Political Crisis: No floor test today, assembly adjourned till 26th March

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly has been adjourned till 26th March, following an outcry by the MLAs of Congress party after Governor Lalji Tandon’s speech. The Governor had asked Chief Minister Kamal Nath to prove his majority after the resignation of 22 MLAs.

Making an address on the first day of the budget session, Tandon stated, “All must follow the rules under the Constitution so that dignity of Madhya Pradesh remains protected.” He then suggested the Kamal Nath government to conduct the floor test, but the statement resulted in an uproar and Tandon had to leave.

The state of Madhya Pradesh fell into a political crisis after senior leader Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from the party last week to join the BJP. His decision to leave the grand old party was followed by the resignation of 22 MLAs.

Only six of the 22 Congress MLA’s resignations, have been accepted thus far. Speaker NP Prajapati has been non-committal on ordering a floor test.

According to the BJP, the Congress party, which had 114 MLAs in the house with an effective strength of 228, had been reduced to a minority government following the resignation of 22 MLAs and called for a floor test.

In the meantime, the Congress stated that it is not scared of the floor test, but wants the Speaker to decide on it. The same was told by Kamal Nath to the Governor on Sunday. “The Governor expected me to meet him. A floor test will be decided by the Speaker. The Speaker will discharge his duties and I will do mine,” Kamal Nath said after meeting Tandon.

The Congress has also went on to say that the crisis in the state is created by the BJP, “We are not afraid of the floor test and are ready for it. Chief Minister Kamal Nath has said that we are ready for the floor test,” PC Sharma said ahead of the Assembly session on Monday.

The Congress party has stated that it is the speaker’s liberty to decide about the workings of the house and the BJP said that the speaker has to abide by the governor’s order.
