Maharashtra: Rape case against senior police officer after colleague's complaint

A case had been filed against a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Maharashtra after a woman cop accused him of rape on the pretext of marrage, an official said.

The alleged incident came to be known when the woman, a 31-year-old assistant inspector, went to the police with a complaint of sexual assault.

On the basis of her complaint, a case was filed at the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station in Central Mumbai, the official said.

The incident happened when the accused was posted in Mumbai and the victim was working as his subordinate, the official said, making a reference to the complaint.

The accused was an Assistant Commissioner of Police at that time and is currently a Deputy Superintendent of Police posted in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region, he said.

The accused cop allegedly raped the woman on the pretext of marrying her in 2019, but later started avoiding her, he said.

As the woman had a feeling that she was cheated, she asked for help from the Vishaka committee (on sexual harassment at workplace) and after an internal probe, the offence was lodged against the DySP, he said.

The DySP has not been taken into custody yet and an investigation was underway, the official added.
