Madhya Pradesh political crisis updates: 20 Congress MLAs quit party

Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia along with 20 MLAs on Tuesday resigned from the party. The development came after the discontented former MP from Madhya Pradesh’s Guna met with BJP leader Amit Shah and PM Modi at Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi.

In a shocking move, all 20 cabinet ministers in the state had submitted their resignations to Chief Minister Kamal Nath at around 11:30 pm Monday, plunging the state’s government into a political precariousness.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met president Sonia Gandhi to talk about the crisis in Madhya Pradesh after several MLAs close to Jyotiraditya Scindia flew to Bangaluru and were unreachable. A legislative party meeting of the Congress is underway in Bhopal.

Few day ago, it had been alleged that BJP was holding at least eight Madhya Pradesh MLAs against their will in Gurugram and in Bengaluru.

In the 230 member assembly, the Congress has 120 MLAs, just four above the majority mark of 116. 144 are from Congress, two from the BSP, one Samajwadi Party and four are independent. The BJP has 107 MLAs and two seats are currently vacant.
