Delhi Dy CM Manish Sisodia announces two-day state mourning in memory of Sheila Dikshit
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced two-day state mourning as a mark of respect in memory of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Sheila Dikshit will be accorded a state funeral tomorrow.
Sheila Dikshit was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Delhi as her career as Delhi CM spanned from 1998 to 2013. Sheila Dikshit was the Chief Minister for three consecutive terms before she was ousted by a new-comer Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sheila Dikshit at her residence. Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his solidarity with the family on social media.
Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar also expressed her condolences to the family. Lata Mangeshkar wrote, “Was deeply saddened to hear about Sheila ji’s demise. A remarkable woman, former CM of New Delhi and a keen admirer of all art forms. We never discussed politics but had long talks on music and poetry. May her soul rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to her family.”
Former President Pranab Mukherjee also paid his tribute to his colleague a few minutes ago. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to former Delhi Chief Minister.
Sheila Dikshit was a highly respected politician across party lines and her sudden demise is a great loss for Indian politics. Sheila Dikshit died of a cardiac arrest later this evening after she was admitted to Escorts hospital at 3:15 pm.
