Delhi: 26-year-old man attacked over spitting in public, dies, police nab accused

A 26-year-old man was killed reportedly after an altercation with another person over spitting in public in Delhi, the police stated on Thursday.

“The victim and the accused fought and both sustained injuries. The former succumbed to his wounds,” a police official said.

According to the police the incident took place on Wednesday in central Delhi’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh complex. The police control room got a complaint at 8:30 pm.

The two men embroiled in the quarrel have been identified as Ankit (26) and Praveen (29). Both of them were hurt during the fight and were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital by a police van. A case of attempt to murder was registered.

While Praveen sustained injuries on his left arm and lower and upper back, Ankit picked up injuries on his left armpit and chest.

Ankit later succumbed to his injuries because of excessive bleeding following which murder charges were added, police said.

The police have also stated that Praveen has been taken into custody and investigation is underway.

Last month, union health minister Harsh Vardhan had made an appeal to all states and union territories to ban spitting in public. He had urged a ban on the sale of tobacco so that spitting can be stopped to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Following his appeal, many state govvernments has put out orders in the regard and banned the sale of tobacco products. The national capital is among the 20 states which has laid fine for spitting in public.

The health ministry had put out a list of dos and dont’s in the time of coronavirus.

Titled ‘COVID Appropriate Behaviours’, the list was put out on Union health ministry’s official Twitter handle.
