Bihar: CM Nitish Kumar inspects flood-affected areas and relief work

Patna: Amid heavy floods in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted an inspection of the affected areas on Friday. He aimed to assess the ongoing relief work in response to the devastating situation, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's office.

Severe Flooding from Kosi Barrage

Many regions in the state face severe flooding due to significant water discharge from the Kosi Barrage in Birpur. This flooding results from relentless rainfall in the catchment areas of Nepal, with several rivers now at or exceeding danger levels in bordering districts.

Breach in Mandar Dam Causes Flooding in Sitamarhi

Flooding in Sitamarhi followed a breach in the Mandar dam in the Belsand block on September 29. On October 3, several residents in the Aurai block of Muzaffarpur were forced to move out of their waterlogged homes due to excessive flooding. Many have erected tarpaulin sheets to create makeshift tents along the roadside.

Community Kitchens Established

To assist those affected by the floods, community kitchens have been set up in the most impacted areas. Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen stated that these kitchens were established in response to the demand from residents for convenience, especially in the two most affected districts.

Boat Movement Allowed for Accessibility

With accessibility challenges due to the floods, authorities have permitted boat movement in affected areas. The District Magistrate noted, “We are taking a liberal approach as per the demands of the people.” Two senior officials have been stationed to oversee operations.

Material Aid and Medical Support Initiatives

In terms of material aid, over 20,000 polythene sheets have been dispatched to the calamity-affected blocks, with plans for further distribution. Medical camps have also been established, along with arrangements for veterinary doctors to assist the impacted communities.
